At a recent installation of 8 Bi-Parting folding shutter doors at a biomass plant in Liverpool, the question of safety was raised as to how would the doors withstand the worst scenario – an explosion?
Working with a structural engineer, the team from Wessex Industrial Doors devised and conducted a destruction test to prove the durability and strength of the doors.
A replica door was manufactured to the same specification as the installed doors and then 3 additional metal sections were added to the door to reinforce it.
A platform was built as part of the test rig and the door was lowered on to it and then 18 tons of sand was tipped on to the door. The metal reinforcement sections were then removed, one at a time. The door withstood the weight of sand prior to its eventual collapse and this satisfied the Local Authority strict requirements.
The doors are now in operation at the site. Each door is situated at high level and has a cutaway section to allow a gantry beam to pass through it which supports an overhead crane that is used to load and off load items.
